Austin City Limits runs across two weekends, October 2-4 and October 9-11, 2026, at Zilker Park just south of downtown Austin, on the shore of Lady Bird Lake. Both weekends run the same lineup, so pick whichever dates work for your schedule -- there's no real advantage to one over the other beyond the artists that only play one weekend. Gates typically open 90 minutes to 2 hours before the first set of the day.
Zilker Park is a real Austin institution, not a stadium lot -- expect live oak trees, Barton Springs a short walk away, and the downtown Austin skyline visible across the lake from parts of the park.
Getting There
Flying In
Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS) is the airport, about 20-30 minutes from downtown depending on traffic. There's no rail line to the airport -- rideshare or a cab is the standard way in.
There's No Parking at Zilker
This is the thing first-timers get wrong most: there is no parking at Zilker Park or in the surrounding neighborhoods during ACL. Don't plan to drive yourself and park nearby. Your real options are:
- The official ACL shuttle -- free with your wristband, running from Republic Square downtown straight to the park.
- Rideshare -- just enter "Austin City Limits Music Festival" or "Zilker Park" as your destination; ACL runs designated drop-off/pickup zones outside the park, each within about half a mile of an entrance.
- Biking or walking from a nearby neighborhood -- genuinely practical if you're staying close, see below.
Entrances
ACL runs three gates: East Barton Springs, West Barton Springs, and the Lady Bird entrance. Check your ticket type before you go -- entrance access can vary by ticket tier, and picking the wrong gate at rush hour costs you real time.
Where to Stay
Hotels near Zilker sell out fast and prices climb hard as the festival approaches -- book as soon as you have dates. Expect $150-450/night in the immediate area during ACL weekends, with Saturday usually the priciest night.
South Congress (SoCo) -- Closest Real Option
South Congress is the closest hotel zone to Zilker and the most popular pick among ACL regulars. Walking time runs 15-30 minutes depending on exactly where you're staying, and SoCo itself is worth the visit for the shops, food trucks, and bars.
Downtown Austin
Not the closest to the park, but the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, and nightlife, and a fine base if you're using the free shuttle from Republic Square anyway. Expect a 35-50 minute walk if you're not taking the shuttle or a rideshare.
The Zilker Neighborhood Itself
Staying in the residential streets immediately around the park (Rollingwood and similar) gets you genuinely walkable distance -- as close as half a mile from the gates -- in a quieter, more family-feeling area. Availability is limited and books up early.
What to Bring
- Portable phone charger, fully charged -- Texas heat plus a full day of phone use will drain a battery fast.
- Comfortable, broken-in shoes. Zilker Park is grass and dirt paths, not pavement -- plan for miles of walking in October Austin heat, which can still run warm.
- Sunscreen and a refillable water bottle -- Texas sun in early October is still real sun.
- A small bag that meets the bag policy -- bags 6"x9" or smaller don't need to be clear (one pocket max). Anything bigger, up to 12"x6"x12", must be clear. Hydration packs are allowed with up to two extra pockets.
What's Not Allowed
Coolers, most wheeled objects and shade structures, outside food and drink, hammocks, glass containers, aerosol cans, and professional photo/video gear (detachable zoom lenses, tripods) without prior approval. No outside alcohol. Smoking and vaping are prohibited across all City of Austin parks, not just an ACL-specific rule. Check the official allowed/prohibited list before you pack, since it's updated closer to the event.
Money Tips
ACL runs on ACL Cashless: register your wristband online ahead of time, link a card, and set a PIN. No card number is stored on the physical wristband -- just the PIN, which you'll enter for every purchase. Set this up before you arrive rather than at a registration tent on-site.
Food and drink are festival-vendor only -- outside food and beverages aren't allowed in, so budget for eating on-site across the whole day if you're not leaving the park.
Insider Tips
- Don't drive to Zilker expecting to park. This is the single most common first-timer mistake -- see "Getting There" above.
- Both weekends run the same headliners, so if you have flexibility, book whichever weekend has better flights or hotel pricing rather than assuming one is "the real one."
- The Austin skyline view across Lady Bird Lake is one of the most distinctive backdrops of any US festival -- worth timing a set near the lake side of the park for golden hour.
- Barton Springs Pool is right next to the park and open during festival hours in most years -- a genuinely good way to cool off midday if the October heat runs high.
- Schedule conflicts are real with a lineup this size. Use CrowdShuffle's schedule builder to plan your day across both weekends and avoid overlap regret.
